FLY FISHING SPOTLIGHT

Fishing in July is a mixed bag of opportunities for the 3 most sought after species; Permit, Bonefish and Tarpon. Considered the best month to attempt a Grand Slam (all three species in one day), July offers excellent sight fishing for tailing bonefish, tailing Permit and tarpon of all sizes.

Many people have written about the tarpon migration coming to a close in June, but in years past, I have been able to fish for migratory tarpon throughout the month of July and some of the best fishing has occurred in this month. The population of baby tarpon is strong throughout the month and allows the angler to use light tackle and small flies. The fly tackle that I prefer is not much heavier that what I use for large trout on the western rivers. I prefer a 7-weight rod with a floating line and a good reel. This equipment is easy to handle for the novice anglers and enjoyable for the experts.

The same is true for spinning tackle as I like a 7 foot light to medium action rod matched to 10 pound Sufix Performance braid. Permit fishing in July is also fantastic. Returning from their offshore spawning ritual in May, the fish have returned to their schedule. By July, the permit are aggressively feeding on the flats giving the fly and spin angler opportunities throughout the day. Beginning the climb to the peak of the bonefishing season, July offers anglers one of the highest concentrations of fish on the flats. With water temperatures staying below the warmer readings of August, anglers can find bonefish tailing, mudding or cruising during all hours of the day.

The single most attractive feature of July fishing in the Florida Keys would be the lack of crowds. Many guides leave the Keys in July and August for cooler areas and anglers are flocking towards the western United States in search of dry fly situations for trout. This opens huge amounts of water to the local guides and allows us to fish virtually anywhere in solitude.

This year, do yourself a favor and book some days in July. If I cannot take you personally, I can recommend a very high quality guide to show you a side of the Florida Keys you may have only dreamed about.
