FLORIDA KEYS, ISLAMORADA AND KEY WEST FLATS FISHING

Flats Fishing is a form of fishing where the angler and guide pursue gamefish in water from 6 inches to 5 feet deep.  Generally this style of fishing is done from a skiff style boat that the guide controls with a pushpole while standing on a tower above the motor or a specialized bay boat that is controlled with a trolling motor.  Each boat has its advantages.

PRICES RANGE FROM:
Flats Skiff : Inshore $400 - $550
Bay Boat : Inshore $450 - $850

The elevated tower serves dual purpose by allowing the guide to be in the best position to control the boat and also giving him altitude which greatly improves the ability to see fish in the water.  The bayboat has a much larger range, is more comfortable and can carry massive volumes of bait and tackle and fish up to 4 people.  The skiff can go in shallower water, but is limited to one or two anglers. Check out these Saltwater Experience shows to see the skiff and bayboat in action on the flats.

In the clear water of the Florida Keys, most fish are seen long before a cast is made.  In fact, this activity can be compared to hunting more closely than most fishing situations.  Anglers who try this style of fishing are often addicted immediately, loose their job, get a divorce, and live under a bridge just to have the chance to do it everyday.  Be careful, I am not kidding, it is that exciting.

Fish that are pursued on the flats in the Florida Keys include: Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Sharks, Redfish, Snook, Trout, Jacks, Barracuda, Black Drum and a few other species.  The tackle that is used on the flats is matched to the fish and generally is considered to be ultra light.  Flyfishing, Spin Fishing and Conventional tackle are all productive.  Methods such as Live Bait, Artificial Lures, Flyfishing, and Chumming are all methods that our guides have expertise.
