TARPON FISHING IN KEY WEST, ISLAMORADA AND THE FLORIDA KEYS

Blessed with perfect geography, The Florida Keys lays perfectly in the middle of the annual tarpon migration.  Each year hundreds of thousands of tarpon migrate through the clear shallow water of the Florida Keys, Islamorada and Key West.

Through the years, anglers and guides have learned how to predict the habits of the tarpon and set up situations where they can be caught on bait, artificial and by flyfishing.  With virtually every situation at our disposal, we target fish on shallow, clear flats with fly rods, deep channels with artificials and bridges and harbors with live bait and chum.  The boats that target tarpon are as varied as the techniques for catching them. Guides fish from boats ranging from a 14 foot skiff to a 50 foot sportfishing boat.

PRICES RANGE FROM:
Flats Skiff : Inshore $400 - $550
Bay Boat : Inshore $450 - $850

Tom Rowland and Rich Tudor have been featured on many ESPN shows, Chasing Silver and Location X on Versus and have filmed many episodes of Saltwater Experience and Saltwater Game about tarpon fishing.  The tarpon is probably the single most important fish to our business and we spend more time pursuing these fish than any other.  Whatever your choice in boats or tackle, SE Charters can find the right guide for you.

METHODS OF FISHING FOR TARPON

Live baiting for tarpon proves to be one of the most productive way to fish for Tarpon.  Guides will frequent channels throughout the backcountry that hold tarpon.  Positioning the boat upstream of the fish, anglers will drift a pinfish, mullet, or crab over the fish and await the strike.

Fishing with artificial lures is also a good way to catch tarpon.  Anglers will use spinning tackle to cast the lures in front of fish that have been sighted or to fish productive areas.

Flyfishing is an extremely popular method of tarpon fishing.  Anglers will hunt the fish and see it before the cast is made.  The fly is placed in front of the fish in a way that the fish simply can not resist the easy meal.  Read more about  flyfishing here.

Chumming for tarpon with shrimp boat by catch is the most effective way to catch tarpon.  Created in Key West Harbor, this method is unique to the Keys and Key West specifically.  Key West has an entire fleet of boats that chum for tarpon every day of the season.
