Stay hydrated
There are very few environments as tough on hydration as the flats. To stay properly hydrated make sure you are drinking AT LEAST 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water every day. If it is super hot and you are sweating alot, drink your bodyweight in ounces. Coffee, Tea, Energy drinks dont count. Sports drinks are fine and actually necessary. Make sure to drink plenty of plain water as well. |
Stay covered
The best way to avoid sun burn and damage is to cover up. Experienced guides often cover themselves from head to toe using a face cover, bandanna or other product, hat, long sleeved shirt, pants and often sungloves. If you are going to be out for many days in a row, this is definitely the best approach. Under Armour makes some incredibly good, light weight clothing specifically made for the sun. Stay sharp
Always have a small file or even a fingernail file with you. When a hook gets dull, you can sharpen it faster than you can tie a new one on, resulting in more fish. |
Be informed
Sirius satellite weather is inexpensive, easy to install and can provide life saving information on storms and sea conditions. If that is not in the cards, make sure you at least have a VHF radio with NOAA channel so that you can hear about approaching fronts or storms. |
