S13:E7 - “Scott And Turner Kite Fishing” (2018)
Turner Rowland joins the guys as Capt Scott Walker guides them to search for Sailfish on Kite Baits.
Captain Scott Walker from the show, Into The Blue joins the Saltwater Experience crew with Turner Rowland as they use kite baits to fish. As an experienced kite bait fisher, Scott attaches quite a few high wind kites, one that reaches 150 feet in depth and the other at 90 feet. An effective way to fish successfully is to have quite a few kite baits in use, as well as using flat lines all at once. With the live bait in the water, there was an automatic pull coming from the lines, and the guys were able to bring in bonitos, and quite a few dolphinfish. Bonitos, also known as false albacore, is a tough and challenging fish to catch. While not as common in the Northeast, they are quite plentiful in the Florida Keys. Turner ends up with an amberjack on the line, and while putting up a good fight, a shark unfortunately was able to get to the fish first.
As always, we had Jason Stemple with us to document this trip in ultra high quality still photos. Here are some of my favorites. Enjoy!

The Florida Everglades make up one of the most well-known and treasured American National Parks. They are also being “strangled” by water issues. Since the damming of the Kissimmee River, the Everglades’ primary source of freshwater, this beautiful fishery has seen “endangered wildlife populations, declining water quality, water mismanagement, [and] extensive urban and agricultural development,” according to Captains For Clean Water, a conservation organization dedicated to restoring the health and natural beauty of the Everglades. S15:E3 - “Flamingo Returns” (2020)
Captains Tom Rowland and Rich Tudor enjoy a productive day in the Florida Bay area of the Everglades
It’s about 6:30 am, just as the sun is beginning to peek over the horizon and Capt. Labadie is charging ahead to the crew’s first destination. Since tarpon are the easiest of the three to catch in low light conditions, this is where Labadie opts to start. Rowland and Tudor remark that they were somewhat surprised at first by the guide’s choice to fish right in front of the coastline resorts and houses. On a day that they were purely targeting tarpon, the Saltwater Experience hosts would tend to go somewhere a little more remote. Labadie chose this spot because he knew the fish would be there, but, more importantly, it was on the way to their other targets, eliminating the need to backtrack later and burn up precious time. Ed Emory is a veteran guide on the South Fork Of The Snake River in Swan Valley, ID. Ed has solidified his great reputation by winning the Jackson Hole One Fly Tournament as a guide an astonishing 5 times. He is the only person to have done this.
Many may know that I started my guide career on the South Fork about the same time that Ed also began his career. We both love this river and want what is best for it.
We started out this week with my friend Capt Scott Walker from Into the Blue Television show. Scott is a wizard with electronics and over the past few weeks, he has gone over how he sets up his radar to mark birds, how he uses High Chirp, Low Chirp, and Downscan to mark everything from Pilchards to Swordfish, how he uses alarms and fish icons to catch more sails, Marlin and Dolphin and this week he talks about the importance of the Trackback feature to scroll back and mark a waypoint on a spot that you have already passed. Definitely a load of good information in all of those.
MONDAY: John Wooden has a famous quote: “Do not let what you can not do interfere with what you can do”. Wise words that have served many well. We discuss how this quote may apply to the quarantine that we are all experiencing. Additionally, we completed the Wim Hof Quarantine Challenge and are on day 41 of the 100-day Burpee Challenge. How’s it going? Read the full article HERE.
In order to bring more attention to this issue, Yeti, Captains for Clean Water and Saltwater Experience gave away a Yeti Flip 12 cooler. We also gave away some hats for listeners of the podcast.
