Saltwater Experience visited one of Mote Marine Laboratory's satellite coral nurseries at Bud & Mary's Marina in Islamorada. As a nonprofit leader in ocean science, Mote is tackling the sharp decline of Florida’s coral reefs—crumbling since the 1970s—through science-based restoration.
🧬 What Is Micro-Fragmentation?
Originally developed by Mote scientists in the late ’90s, micro-fragmentation is a game-changing technique. By breaking coral into tiny pieces, growth is accelerated dramatically. These small fragments grow faster and produce more corals in a shorter time.
More impressively, researchers can identify genetically resilient corals—those naturally better equipped to survive rising temperatures and stressors—and propagate them selectively.
🏝️ From Nursery to Reef
Coral fragments “nursery grow” here for ~6 months.
Once mature, they’re outplanted in clusters of identical fragments.
These pieces fuse naturally, covering damaged reef areas.
The result: old reef foundations are restocked with live coral, restoring structure and ocean habitat.
This fuse-and-grow approach brings back critical shelter for reef fish, invertebrates, and marine biodiversity.
🔍 How You Can Get Involved
Mote Marine offers free public tours at its three Florida Keys facilities. Visiting one is a great way to learn, support, and witness coral restoration firsthand.
🌟 Why It Matters
Coral reefs are vital for coastline protection, fishery sustainability, and marine diversity. With techniques like micro-fragmentation, we accelerate reef recovery and safeguard these ecosystems for future generations.
